Resumo

Introduction: Formative assessment is an essential practice for the development of educational programs, particularly in healthcare, where continuous learning and the practical application of knowledge are crucial. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the impacts and challenges of formative and summative assessments in healthcare education and their effectiveness in the teaching-learning process. Methodology: The research was conducted through an integrative literature review, using databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, BVS, and Scielo, with the descriptor "formative assessment." Exclusion criteria included theoretical studies without empirical data or practical experiences, studies published in languages other than Portuguese, English, or Spanish, and outdated studies that do not reflect current formative assessment practices. Results and Discussion: The results indicated that the main barriers include the lack of educator training, resistance to changes in traditional assessment practices, and difficulties in managing time and resources. These barriers negatively impact the effectiveness of continuous feedback, which is essential for the development of students' practical and theoretical competencies. Conclusion: Formative assessment is crucial for training competent healthcare professionals but faces significant challenges. Overcoming these barriers is key to ensuring that assessment effectively contributes to student learning, suggesting the implementation of strategies to enhance educator training and promote changes in assessment practices.
